Is free antivirus really free?

Your buying guide for antivirus software You do get more if you buy an internet security suite, but what you get in the free version is stripped down package with a smaller feature set. Don't expect to get extras such as spam filtering, improved firewalls, parental controls, password managers and support for mobile devices, although some of this can be had for free. The free offerings from Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender and Panda all offer basic antivirus and anti-malware protection, giving you a good chance to keep your PC free of threats which could lose you data and take a lot of time to put right. Since testing antivirus software with real malware requires a lot of time and effort, not to mention extremely specialist knowledge, we don't do this ourselves. Instead, we use the latest results from several well-respected independent test houses, including SE Labs, AV-test.org and AV Comparatives. Is free antivirus really free? Yes it is. But you may trade off some privacy. AVG’s privacy policy, showing what rights it takes over your personal and non-personal information when you download and use its free product, has caused quite a furore since it was published. You grant it the right to send some of your (non-personal) information to third parties, which may include advertisers. Some have said ‘Well, this is just AVG being more upfront about its policy; they all do it’, so we checked at what each company says in its privacy policy. They’re not all the same: some require you to opt out to prevent sharing – and AVG says it will offer this – some ask you to opt in, but will respect your decision if you don’t, and some don’t share your information at all with third parties. Best is Bitdefender, which claims not to share information with anybody outside its own company or subsidiaries. We think this is as it should be with a security product, but second-best is the assumption not to share, with an opt-in, should you want to receive ‘relevant’ offers. This is what Avast and Avira do. Panda does the same as AVG, requiring you to specifically unsubscribe to avoid security-related emails. Does free antivirus software work? Antivirus software is designed to prevent damaging programs from infecting your PC and laptop. All the free products here do that, but not all are as effective as others. As a secondary task, though, the full paid-for products should reduce the amount of unwanted advertising and offers that get through to you, and they usually offer quite a few other features as we mentioned above. But without further ago, here are reviews of the leading free AV programs – you really can get something for nothing.

AVIRA FREE ANTIVIRUS Avira offers very strong protection against both widespread and zero-day malware. Its austere but option-packed interface can be intimidating at first, and slower computers might see a performance hit during active scans. However, Avira Free Antivirus' sheer effectiveness, high degree of customization and wide range of free add-on features — including a VPN client and a privacy-minded Web browser — make it our Editor's Choice. BITDEFENDER ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION Bitdefender's malware-detection rate is second to none. The company's free antivirus product covers all the basics, offers a very low system-performance impact and, with free add-on software, provides such useful extras as a secure browser and a limited password manager. But Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition's bare-bones interface is hard to figure out and offers no customization options — you can't even schedule a scan. It is software that's best for users who want a set-it-and-forget-it security solution. PANDA FREE ANTIVIRUS Panda's very good malware-detection scores are marred by its high rates of false positives, or benign files mistakenly flagged as malware. But it has a fresh, customizable user interface that's easy and even fun to use, a small system-performance impact, and enough configuration options to satisfy most users. On the downside, it offers few extra features, shows a lot of ads and tries to hijack your Web browser's settings. AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE In the past year, AVG has improved its malware-detection rate so that it now rivals industry leaders Avira and Bitdefender. AVG Antivirus Free only moderately slows down a user's PCs, and offers a wide range of customization options, if few extra features. But we were turned off by its pushy, incessant recommendations to upgrade to paid AVG software. AVAST FREE ANTIVIRUS Avast Free Antivirus for its friendly interface, nearly imperceptible system impact, sophisticated configuration options and useful extra features, which include a password manager and a network scanner. But nearly every other product we evaluated offers better antivirus protection. You may still want to consider Avast Free Antivirus if you already use other Avast products, such as Avast Free Mobile Security for Android (our top choice in that category) MICROSOFT WINDOWS DEFENDER Windows Defender comes with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, but that doesn't mean you should use it. While its once-subpar malware-detection rate has been getting better, Windows Defender still came in last among the six products we reviewed, and its high rate of false positives confirmed that ranking. It has a surprisingly high system impact during full scans, and does nothing to protect non-Microsoft browsers from online malware. In addition, it has nearly no extra features. Even if you don't want to pay for antivirus protection, you can do better than Windows Defender.

Symantec Norton Security for Mac Security giant Symantec will likely be unhappy that Norton ranks only fifth in AV-Test’s run-down of the best Mac antivirus programs, but it is a really close-run thing. Norton picked up 99.17 percent of the filth AV-Test threw at it, which is by any stretch a good result.
