New ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall 2013
Do you know if your computer is safe? According to Michael Calce, who was once an infamous computer hacker a.k.a Mafiaboy, “people are putting themselves at serious risk by not having minimum security, which at least includes a firewall and antivirus software. It’s basically like leaving your home with the doors unlocked.”
That’s why we’re so excited to offer you ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall 2013 today! It combines the world’s No.1 firewall with award-winning antivirus software into one easy-to-use product that protects against hackers, viruses, spyware, and other malware. And did we mention it’s completely free for all individuals and not-for-profit charitable entities?
ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall is the most complete free Internet security solution for PC users. And according to AV-TEST, our new product is just as – if not more effective than – leading “paid” antivirus software. See the chart below.
Between cybercriminals, who are constantly evolving their techniques and launching new attacks on consumers every day, and the explosion of information sharing via social networks, new security threats are on the rise. ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall offers a multi-layered defense when it comes to protecting consumers against already identified and new threats..
Additionally, our new product’s firewall and antivirus are designed and road-tested to work seamlessly and efficiently together, eliminating any compatibility problems and simplifying the entire security experience for all consumers.

Panda Global Protection 2013 review
Panda has jazzed up the interface a bit since the 2012 version, with a nod to Windows 8’s Metro interface. See also G Data InternetSecurity 2012.
On the front panel are big, squarish icons for all the main components of the suite. There’s also a small status panel at the top, showing the number of scanned files and the total number of infections spotted. Go to Security Advisor.
At the bottom is a row of icons covering social media protection and buttons calling up security tools, such as network analysis and a virtual keyboard. See all Internet Security Suite reviews.
The suite includes scanning, anti-virus and firewall, but also extras like file encryption, PC optimisation, parental control and personal data protection.
Each of these tools has its own setup and reporting screen and these are clearly laid out and generally easy to navigate.
Global Protection 2013 has a new Scan Manager which, Panda claims, only works when necessary and can result in 70 percent faster scans.
We were interested to test this and so ran our standard test, timing the scanning of 50GB of mixed files, twice. The first time, the program took just under 40 minutes to scan 456,329 files, giving a scan rate of 191 files/sec, near the fastest among programs we’ve tested.
When we ran the same test again, the program took 23 min 42 sec to examine 273,770 files, roughly half the time and half the file set, so the intelligence certainly seems to be working.
Our final test, copying a 1GB file with and without a background scan running, slowed the copy from 43 sec to 50 sec, an increase of 16 percent, one of the lowest we’ve seen.
The anti-virus software test organisation AV Test hasn’t yet finished evaluating the 2013 AV engine in Panda Global Protection, but it tested the 2012 product and scored it at 13.0/18.0, a fair score, though only about half way up the field of 25 IS products in its test group.
It isn’t up with the likes of Kaspersky or ZoneAlarm and is even beaten, overall, by Microsoft’s free Security Essentials 4.
Breaking down the score into its components parts, Panda 2012 managed 5.0/6.0 for Protection, 4.0/6.0 for Repair and 4.0/6.0 for Usability.
It achieved 100 percent on detection of recent malware and the same on older threats, but was only average on detecting zero-day attacks, even though Panda pioneered sharing threat details through the cloud.
In the Repair category it did well at spotting widespread threats, including rootkits, but was only average at removing them and well below average on fixing other critical system modifications. It also gave a few more false positives than the group average.
The extra facilities within the program include file encryption, with a password manager to safely store your online passwords, and PC optimisation.
Optimisation in Panda’s book comprises cleaning temporarily files and disk defragmentation, but there’s also a facility to schedule backup of selected files and file classes.

Windows 8 Security: What's New
When Windows 8 comes out later this year, the new Start screen and Metro-style apps will likely be the first changes you'll notice, but those aren't the only things that are new. Microsoft is also making some serious security enhancements to help keep your system safer and to improve Windows' ability to combat viruses and malware. It just may be the biggest improvement to Windows security yet.
Antivirus Comes Preinstalled
For the first time in the history of Windows, you’ll enjoy protection from viruses, spyware, Trojan horses, rootkits, and other malware from the very first day you turn on your Windows PC--without spending a cent. Windows 8 comes with an updated version of Windows Defender that includes traditional antivirus functions in addition to the spyware protection and other security features that it has offered since Windows Vista. Windows Defender now provides similar protection--and a similar look and feel--to that of the free Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus program, which Microsoft has offered to users as an optional download since 2009.
Windows 8 Security: What's NewThe updated Windows Defender resembles Microsoft Security Essentials.
Since Windows Defender will provide at least basic virus and malware protection, purchasing yearly antivirus subscriptions (such as from McAfee or Norton) or downloading a free antivirus package (like AVG or Avast) is optional, whereas before it was pretty much required if you wanted to stay virus-free. Of course, you may disable Windows Defender and use another antivirus utility that promises better protection and more features, but at least everyone will have basic protection by default.

Protect Your Passwords
Here are a few principles for creating strong passwords and keeping them safe:
The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack. Use at least 10 characters; 12 is ideal for most home users.
Mix letters, numbers, and special characters. Try to be unpredictable – don’t use your name, birthdate, or common words.
Don’t use the same password for many accounts. If it’s stolen from you – or from one of the companies with which you do business – it can be used to take over all your accounts.
Don’t share passwords on the phone, in texts or by email. Legitimate companies will not send you messages asking for your password. If you get such a message, it’s probably a scam.
Keep your passwords in a secure place, out of plain sight.
Back Up Your Files
No system is completely secure. Copy important files onto a removable disc or an external hard drive, and store it in a safe place. If your computer is compromised, you’ll still have access to your files.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7
Last year's CNET Editors' Choice award winner Kaspersky returns with another winner. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 features a new interface and new protection. But, unlike last year, the competition for Editors' Choice in this space was fierce with several worthy contenders all bunching toward the top of the scale. For example, BitDefender Antivirus 2008 is perhaps the most improved product of the year, nipping at the heals of Kaspersky. What makes Kaspersky Anti-Virus continue to outshine its competition is its ease of use combined with thorough antivirus protection. No firewall, no gimmicks, just straight AV protection. Kaspersky also makes an Internet security suite, yet Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 feels complete as a standalone product and not, like Norton Antivirus 2008, a cog in larger family of products. That said, there is no firewall protection within Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2008, leaving you to choose your own firewall protection. Once again, Kaspersky requires considerably less disk space than Norton. The only real negative here is the list price, which can be $10 to $20 more than the competition, depending where you purchase it. Still, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 provides the most complete antivirus production on the market today and deserves our Editors' Choice for best antivirus product for 2008.
Setup
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 costs $59.95 for a single license and $69.95 for a three-user license. By comparison, Norton Antivirus 2008 costs $39.95 for a single-user license (there are no three-user versions of NAV 2008). Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista, where Norton Antivirus runs only on Windows XP and Windows Vista. Kaspersky requires 512 RAM and at least 50MB of hard drive space (Norton requires 300 MB of hard drive space). A full-function 30-day trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 is available.
We experienced no problems with several different installations during the month of August. After installation, the system requires a reboot for full protection.
Should you want to remove Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, the product includes an uninstall option in the All Programs menu. Once we uninstalled the product and rebooted, we found no lingering evidence of Kaspersky remaining on our machine.
Interface
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 sports a cleaner, more sophisticated interface than last year's. We like it best among the 2008 antivirus applications we've seen. Immediately our eye was drawn to the red banner with text that told us our signature files were out of date. This is visually very effective and efficient, whereas a simple Fix It button to the side is not always informative. Also, unlike Norton's morbid, black border, we like the open, bright, and colorful interface of Kaspersky that is skinnable to suite your own tastes.
